SUSAN KLEIN - KLEIN TECHNIQUE

20.-25.7.2009 daily at 12-4pm Pohdin talo
Teacher: SUSAN KLEIN
Course price 250 eur (sis.alv 45,08?)
Includes a theory lesson on Monday 20.7.
Language: ENGLISH / SUOMI
Assistant for course: SUSANNA NURMINEN
This workshop will be designed specifically for the Full Moon
Festival. It will focus on the body-felt understanding, as well as the
theoretical precepts of Klein Technique TM.
Klein TechniqueTM is an education of the body on a profoundly deep
level of understanding. We view and cultivate the body as an integral
whole in order to maximize its full functional potential. Our aim is
to develop dancers as unique movers, maximizing individual potential
and essential self-knowledge that will lead to flourishing artistry
and minimizing injury.
We will emphasize the idea of moving from our deepest
structural and energetic tissue, the bone. We will discuss the anatomy
of the muscles of deepest structural support; the psoas, the
hamstrings, the pelvic floor muscles, and the external rotators, which
bring the pelvis on top of the legs and connect the body into the
floor and upwards to the space. We will clearly explain, and
physically work with these muscles in order to bring the bones into
alignment that in turn, brings the body into a place of connectedness.
This leads to true strength, power and efficiency in movement.
In Klein Technique TM we look at the body as part of the living system
of life, and part of a systems approach to movement. We believe that
the body exists within our gravitational system of the floor and the
space. We do not exist in isolation, nor do we dance in isolation. We
exist and dance with the ground, the space and with each other.

JYRKI KARTTUNEN'S DANCE PIECE WORKSHOP 18-25.7.2009
photo: Bengt Wanselius
Director: Jyrki Karttunen
Time and duration: 18-25.7.2009, daily 10am - 4pm
Price: 250 eur (see course sales conditions)
Applications: by e-mail harri@fullmoondance.fi
Information: artistic director Harri Kuorelahti / harri@fullmoondance.fi
Choreographer Jyrki Karttunen will lead a new concept workshop for
dance-field professionals and students at Full Moon Dance Festival.
The workshop is comprised of a one-hour warm-up and work led by
Karttunen. Participants will become familiar with his working method
as a choreographer and the movement world he creates. The
work-in-progress type performance will be prepared during the course
and presented at the festival programme on Saturday 25th of July. This
workshop will be at the same time the beginning of a rehearsal period
for Karttunen Kollektiv?s new group work. The new course concept gives
participants the chance to familiarise themselves with Karttunen
Kollektiv?s working methods and movement ideas, and at the same time
influence the Karttunen Kollektiv piece Days of Disco, which is
currently being made and will be premiered in the autumn 2009.
The goal of the workshop is to apply new kinds of ideas about the
working method and goal of dance courses. The course offers
choreographer the chance to experiment with ideas for a piece, and it
will provide the participants with a deeper than normal perspective on
the choreographer?s way of perceiving dance expression and movement.
Daily working time might vary according to changes agreed on the
course to make it possible to work in smaller groups too. We kindly
ask participants to present their professional background with short
cv and motivation for this workshop.
The wide-scale use of different kinds of methods of expression is
characteristic of Karttunen?s work, and this means that the dancer
must have the skill to consciously vary their way of performing
between different performance techniques. Karttunen?s movement
language is characterised by the goal of striving to bring together
the here-and-now quality in the performance and movement based on a
pre-defined form, and at the same time seeing the performer as a
creator rather than a realiser.

" I see dance as something different from the presentation of ready
opinions and claims. Dance art to me is fundamentally an abstract art
form. Its meaning is found in the fact that it happens in the
here-and-now. It shows movement and events, that is world is not yet
complete. Deborah Hay has had a big effect on my way of thinking about
this. [...]
This presentation of the unready means that how things appear on the
stage becomes more fundamental than what is being shown there. I think
that the content of a piece could be how things are presented.

Full Moon Dance Festival's dance piece workshop group will, with Jyrki
Karttunen in charge, prepare an outline of a performance based on the
themes of Karttunen's piece Days of Disco, which he will work on later
in autumn 2009. Days of Disco is a kind of journey in time to the
golden age of disco in the 1970s. Karttunen's piece, which will be
completed later in autumn 2009, will be realised by five dancers who
have already been chosen and a planning group, some of whom will also
be present at the Pyhäjärvi course.

Palle Granhøj workshop - Obstruction technique
25.7. at 12-2pm Ikosen koulu
Course Price: 20EUR
Contemporary dance course for professionals and students
GRANHØJ DANS - The Obstruction technique
The method
The working method is to Palle Granhøj the starting point of a process that leads to find the material of every production: A sequence of movements developed by a dancer that might as well be the result of a concrete task suggested by the choreographer - is subject to different ways of obstructing actions coming from the outside, that forces him or her to adapt or reshape the movements, discovering in the way new, unexpected patterns of movement. The work leads at the same time the dancer to a higher level of awareness of the physical principles that rule the movement. In the demanding process of deconstructing systematically the movement in order to give it a different shape or eventually turn back to the original movement later on, the dancer releases a particular kind of energy that amplify the level of expressivity of the movement, allowing him or her to develop a strong stage-presence and authenticity
To find the core of the dance
The obstruction technique seeks to find the core of the movement, which is at the same time to find the core of dance. What is dance and what is the dancer`s role in the dance? The working method helps also finding personal answers to these questions
Palle Granhøj has developed the Obstruction Technique in his personal way inspired in a working experience with the North American choreographer/director Nancy Spanier (Colorado) who introduced him for the main principles of the obstruction technique.
